Pea Cooper is a Scottish born and based Milliner. As one of the very few fully trained milliners in Scotland, Pea’s hats are in demand the world over.
The phrase ‘Mad Hatter’ could have been coined for her! Pea’s passion for hats took her to London, where she studied at Kensington & Chelsea College under the watchful eyes of mighty British Milliners Kirsten Scott, Jane Smith and Ian Bennett. Fluent in all aspects of millinery from fashion, theatrical, bridal, block making and illustration, Pea’s training alone puts her head and shoulders above any self taught milliner.
After graduating in 2006, Pea took a position with Richard Nylon. Richard is Australia’s top Milliner and while working there Pea designed and made hats for Melbourne Fashion Week and racing events like the Gold Cup.
On returning to Scotland, Pea set up her own business designing and making hats for the bespoke market. She uses vintage and unusual fabrics to create bespoke pieces specially made to the clients specifications. Pea is adamant she can turn anything into a hat and frequently does, though she is just as happy using conventional fabrics like felt and leather too.
After being nominated for International Milliner of the Year in 2009, Pea’s career has went from strength to strength. 2010 saw Pea become a successful participant in the Starter for 6 programme that nutures creative entrepreneurs and she is now a business mentor for the programme. In 2011 aswell as being part of an outstanding exhibition at the Collins Gallery, Glasgow, Pea was also nominated for ‘Scottish Accessory Designer of the Year 2011′. She has collaborated with some of the best names in the business including making hats for Harris Tweed that will be on permanent display on the Isle of Harris, aswell as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. In 2012 Pea was selected to be part of the Fashion Foundry scheme, a business incubator run by the CEO and Creative Scotland that is nurturing 10 of Scotland’s most promising designers and she is now based at the Fashion Foundry studio in South Block, in Glasgow’s vibrant Merchant City.
